Cliffside Inscription of “Shan Ren Zu Yu”
The inscription here was originally penned by the famous Southern-Song-Dynasty scholar Wang Xiu, who also wrote the “Yi Wo Qian Gu” inscription beside the huge sleeping Buddha statue. The whole inscription is 2.9×0.76 meters in size, with an area of about 2.2 square meters. Each character is 0.5 meters across. The four characters “Shan Ren Zu Yu” roughly means that the mountain dwellers here are content with their secluded life as long as they have fish to catch. Written in regular script and carved in intaglio, the sturdy and vigorous characters demonstrate perfect artistic techniques and are regarded by many art lovers as a masterpiece of Chinese calligraphy and rock carving art.
