The tablet is a huge west-facing stone slab of 5.6 meters high and 5.72 meters long. It was originally erected in memory of Wang Jian, who led the soldiers and civilians in the Diaoyucheng City to win one battle after another in protection of their besieged city during the later period of the resistance. After Wang Li, the last general guarding the city, opened the city gate to surrender to the Yuan army, then a Buddhist story was carved onto the tablet in replace of the words that were offensive to the Yuan imperial government. Because of this relief-carved Buddhist story and the statue of the Goddess of Mercy with a Thousand Arms that was carved on the front, the tablet was popularly called a “Tablet of Goddess of Mercy with a Thousand Arms” in the past.
The tablet is a second-class relic of the national level. Although there are only 61 remaining Chinese characters about Wang Jian and his battle achievements, the tablet is actually the most precious historical attestation to the fierce battles fought in the remote past.
