In late December 1926, Chen Yi, a proletarian revolutionary, was working in the army as Director of Organization Section of the Political Department of the Third Division of Sichuan Army. In February 1927, he visited the Diaoyucheng Fortress on an inspection tour and wrote the poem, which was later published in a periodical of the Political Department of the division.
